They are your insurance to retain customers and the highest level of data integrity and availability. At the same time you want to be able to easily restore individual mailboxes or even single emails. How can you make sure you can do both?

First things first: why is making backups so incredibly important?
Hardware fails
There is one thing you can be sure of, and that is that your hardware will fail at some point. Even if you are 100% virtualized or in the cloud, your data still is tied to a physical device and somewhere along the line you can expect physical disasters to happen.
People fail
Besides the risk of failing hardware, there is the risk of failing people. After all, at the end of the day, it is people that are in control of the hardware. And people make errors. They delete data, forget to log out, forget to unplug, open emails they shouldn’t, click on a link they shouldn’t, and one day, without warning, your data is gone.

Backing up and restoring email with SEP sesam
If you want to back up and restore Kopano data quickly and easily, there are several ways you can do so. One is to use SEP sesam, a backup and recovery tool developed by SEP, one the most experienced backup vendors in the open source application domain.
The nice thing about SEP sesam is that on top of being able to back up the complete server and common applications such as OpenLDAP and MySQL, it makes it possible to use the Kopano Bricklevel Backup API in order to back up the user’s mailboxes. This means the SEP Sesam client first receives a list of available users on the Kopano system and then goes ahead and exports the mailboxes that are to be backed up by using the Kopano tool “Kopano-backup”.
